This Little Light of Mine

October 10, 2018

… I am going to let it shine. You remember this classic? It was one of my favorites for when I was a child this seemed so easy to do. How many of us know that as we get into adulthood, it becomes so much more challenging?

I am reminded through Niomi just how vital it is to ensure that my light is on and illuminating at watts to be seen from space. I went to her school Friday for lunch, and as she is rushing to get to me, her teacher stops her and whispers in her ears. All I could hear from the exchange was, “Tell her.”

“Guess what mommy. I am a superhero!” Niomi was so excited, so I just pretended to understand what she was talking about.

Her teacher came over and wanted to know if Niomi told me the good news. “I learned she is a superhero, but I am not certain I know what that means,” was all I could say.

Her teacher revealed that Niomi had won the school’s hero award. Each month the teachers must select two students from their class who exemplifies a hero. Niomi was selected this first month; her teacher explained that when she came upon Niomi’s name while going down the roster, it was a no-brainer.

“Niomi always walks in my classroom filled with joy. She is so compassionate, caring, and encourages everyone. She’s sweet and yet strong. There’s a light that she has. It’s just this light that is with her,” her teacher explained.

I listened at that lunch table while fighting tears. My little girl. The one everyone said her life would be horrific because of my divorce, and her abnormal co-parenting schedule is a light in her classroom. Niomi herself mentioned that when her teacher told her she won and why she did, that she wanted to cry.

God uses what the rest deems unusable. Niomi should be anything but a light according to the standards of this world. She is a statistic… but God! This statistic is shining beyond her peer group. She’s beaming so much so that even teachers have noticed.

Be encouraged. Remember to live in the never considered. Our God lives outside of facts. He uses the unexpected, and His light can be seen in all and through all!

Keep shining beloved, just as God intended for you to shine.

Sincerely,

Nona Phinn
