First Responder

February 9, 2018

It is so amazing to watch my daughter grow in Christ. For my particular circumstance, it is truly a miracle. The events that took place in my world kept me on my knees just praying that my daughter would not grow up in a manner where we would have to be fighting off seeds of deceit and deception when it comes to learning God’s Word and building a true relationship with Him.

Well, this week has been a tough one. Monday night I get home and realize the heat isn’t working and every day this week we were to be in the 20’s. To survive the night, I turned on the fireplace in the family room and set up camp for my daughter and me. The fireplace had a smell coming from it and so did the furnace that wasn’t working. Feeling overwhelmed and anxious, I begin to panic. I pulled up Washington Gas’ website to learn all about gas leaks and had the phone in my hands with 911 on speed dial.

In the midst of my panic, I heard a small still voice. My daughter Niomi. “Can we pray,” she asks? I was so frustrated, I asked her to do so. Man, there are no words to explain the moment. What came out of my six-year old’s month made me feel encouraged but yet ashamed all at the same time. There were power and peace in her prayer.  The atmosphere of worry I created, was squashed by the faith and calmness my daughter brought into our home. About an hour later the smell disappeared and she proclaimed, “See, God is taking care of us”.

If I rewind, this isn’t the only time I go into solution, I have to fix it myself mode and Niomi goes into prayer. Every time, truly every time something occurs in our lives that is out of our control, my daughter asks the same question. “Can we pray”? This last incident I heard the Holy Spirit say, “Frist Responder”.

See a first responder is the first person to arrive on the scene during an emergency. They are trained and equipped to handle disasters, emergencies that the normal human being is unable to manage. Niomi is fully aware of who is best trained and equipped to handle every single situation that is way too big for us to handle. She calls on the Frist Responder. Here’s what makes her and I different. She’s doesn’t get stressed out trying to fix it and after realizing she can’t then calls on our God. Her first response to any “emergency” is to call on the First Responder.

What is your knee-jerk reaction to a life emergency? Do you look to yourself who is ill-equipped, or do you call on the One who holds all things in His hands? The One who gives peace during our worse, comfort in the midst of our pain, wisdom where we are clueless, strength in our weakness, and power where we are powerless. The One who is trained and fully able to do all things!

Matthew 19:26  Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
