I love beginning a new year. I always look at it as a fresh start. It’s when I take inventory and review the happenings of the year before and decide what will be different moving forward. In addition, I take time out to reflect on all the blessings, big and small, that I enjoyed in the year prior. I then count those blessings realizing just how lucky I am despite life not being my definition of perfect.
The year has just begun and I have already been given a new little blessing. My church always kicks off the year with a corporate fast, asking all members to participate in praying on a focus theme. This year they asked us to do so with a prayer partner. A person we would pray with throughout the fast. I couldn’t find one. I mentioned this dilemma to my five year old and what came next tickled my heart. My Niomi presented me an offer I could not refuse. “Mommy, I’ll be your prayer partner.”
That night before bed, I knelt down and prayed with my new prayer partner. She told me her prayer needs and I told her mine. I expressed my desire to be closer to God. My girl began to pray for me, “Dear God, help mommy be closer to you. Protect her. We worship you, God. Send your angels to her. Amen.” Niomi then looked up at me and asked, “Was that ok, mommy?” How could I say anything other than, “Yes it was baby. Just perfect.”
It was in this moment that I realized how much of a life partner my little girl is to me. From this moment on, whenever I feel like I am doing life alone, I will remember my prayer partner. Thank you, God for my New Year blessing. My eyes have been opened that much more.
Sincerely,
Nona A. Phinn
